Westnet first to offer state-wide coverage

Western Australian owned and operated internet service provider Westnet has become the first local company to utilise an upgrade in Telstra technology, offering local call cost access to the internet across Western Australia.

Westnet previously provided local call internet access to 95 percent of the state through local Points of Presence (POP), but a new wholesale product just released, means the firm can now offer the service to all Western Australians. “With Westnet being 100% WA owned, with all the directors and many of the staff from regional backgrounds, we were extremely keen to utilise this technology and expand our services to meet the needs of all Western Australians,” Westnet Managing Director Peter Brown said. “Westnet has specialised in the provision of an accessible, friendly and reliable service to regional and remote WA. “Now, no matter where you live in Western Australia, no matter how remote, if you have a computer and a phone line, you will be able to access the internet through Westnet for the same price as someone in Perth.” Mr Brown said the Westnet model of internet delivery was unique in Australia.

“Our system of utilising local agents, some 250 of them in towns throughout the state, means as Westnet grows, so too does the income and employment opportunities in these towns,” he said.

“And there’s the added advantage of having a local face to put to your internet service provider.” Westnet is a WA success story, founded in Geraldton in 1995, growing to service the entire state in just six years. The company’s efforts were recently awarded with the prestigious Telecommunications Service Award offered by the WA Information and Telecommunications Association.
