Camps play a major role in the
education of isolated students and KSOTA's students have the
opportunity to attend at least three camps per year, with
some additional specialist camps being added from time to
time. Home Tutor Seminar
Home Tutor Seminar is one of the
most important events on the school's calendar. Held in
Broome at the Camp School, HTS brings together the entire
school community including students, teachers, parents and
home tutors. For Home Tutors and Parents, this
is a "Professional Develpoment Week". Sessions are organised
to help and guide them through any problems being
encountered or to just give ideas on different teaching
methods. There is also time allotted with the child's
teacher in Home Tutor sessions to discuss any aspect of the
curriculum or teaching situation. A creche for babies and
day care for toddlers is arranged by the school for those
with younger children so time at these sessions is
uninterrupted. Children spend time with their
teachers doing lessons, going on excursions, or
participating in sports. Swimming lessons are conducted with
qualified instructors. The School Health Nurse and the
Dental Health Nurse also examine all children from Kindy to
year seven. Any treatment required is carried out
immediately in Broome wherever possible. If the School Nurse
identifies any other problems, appointments are made at the
hospital or appropriate centres. Most importantly however, Home
Tutor Seminar is a time of fun , networking and friendship
with others in the same boat . The P&C and the School Council also have their annual
general meetings at the Home Tutor Seminar. Mini
Camps In Term 3 each year the school
holds mini camps. These are regional and designed to be at
minimal cost. The mini camps, often held on stations, or in
the small towns, are a time for students to get together and
develop team skills in sports, problem solving and project
work. Often, specialists have been used such as an Artist,
Author, Scientist, Musician, Sportsman to enrich the
learning programmes. Camps have at times, been linked to the
CrocFest or have been held to correspond with WALNA testing.
End of Year Camps The final camps for the year
coincide with the year 7 graduation ceremony in December.
Perth Muster The students in years 4 to 7 attend
Camp School in Perth along with all the Year 4 - 7's from
the other four Schools of Air. It is a fun packed exciting
nine days to finish off the year. This camp offers valuable
insights into city living for these rural students including
visits to museums, science centres, Adventure World, sports
days and boat trips, allowing them access to experiences
otherwise not within their reach. Once again, socialisation
is an important part of this camp too.
